Help me give my students a reason to come into school and read over the summer months. Incentives can only go so far, we need storylines that captivate and are diverse for our population.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching in a low-income area with busy parents, my students enter middle school with high expectations. They desire care and concern from adults, whether it be in passing conversations or curriculum and lesson planning.
My students are full of life and wonder, they have personality for days.
They look forward to being challenged and get bored with complacency. Most are hands-on learners who benefit from getting up and moving around the classroom and benefit from intense differentiation.
With around 700 students in my middle school, there are many different styles of learning and interests to accommodate. Sometimes, it's not enough to give them materials because WE think they're good enough. We have to be able to supply them with the best of what they're interested in, to the best of our abilities.
My Project
This summer will be our second year that we are attempting to promote summer reading. Every Monday, we will open the main hallway for an hour. During this hour, we will have our book carts (hopefully) stacked with a variety of diverse titles for our middle school students to select from. They can turn in the finished book the following week or keep them until they are finished later in the summer. Each student keeps track of their own reading by logging on a rating system. When they come in on Mondays, they are able to show their logs for prizes.
Last year, we were excited to kick off this program and cannot wait to expand it to include more titles this year.
One aspect of this program that I feel was super successful was the inclusion of incoming sixth graders. To make them feel like they are a part of our "Freedom Family" before they start the school year is so powerful. They can feel a sense of ownership over a school family that they will invest in for the next three years.
