My students need "more". More games, more books explaining different cultures' views, more craft supplies to make learning fun and interactive, more dictionaries in their native languages... just more!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine growing up in bright and colorful Africa -- your aunts, uncles, cousins, friends are all there, along with your familiar food, languages, customs, plants, flowers, trees and house. Then your parents announce to you that you're moving to the United States and just like that, you find yourself in cloudy Ohio. Everything is unfamiliar: people speak a strange language, eat weird food, smell different than you remember people smelling and even act way different in school. The weather is cold, the sky is often gray and your feel confused and sad often without even having the language to express yourself.
All of my students have experienced enormous cultural and linguistic transition as they learn to live life in the United States.
Despite their difficulties, my students are willing and eager to learn. They love learning new words, ideas, patterns and thoughts. They have so much to say and are learning the tools to put those things into words in the English language. Many of my students struggle with phonics and reading but are thrilled when they see a breakthrough in their progress!
My Project
The things I have requested here will help to broaden the horizons of my students. There are books on here explaining and exposing the students to different holidays and traditions (Ramadan, Halloween, Christmas, Chinese New Year, etc.). I want my students' horizons to be broadened and to open the dialogue up to respecting and caring about all people,
no matter what they believe or what traditions they follow!
I have also requested more games and supplies that will make learning English more interactive and fun. I like to play games with my students and complete interesting art projects to increase memory of new concepts and words but I'm finding myself coming up short on resources, as a first-year teacher.
Lastly, I've also requested a number of dictionaries. I have students coming to our school who do not speak a word of English but are fluent in French and Wolof (a language spoken in many West African countries). I would love to provide to them dictionaries in their own languages!
