My students need the mounted insect collection and butterfly chart to create accurate diagrammatic drawings of insects. They will display their works of art in quality frames for the rest of the school to see.
I am the Visual Arts teacher in a high school on the coast of North Carolina. Our school is a high-performing, academically successful, rural school that is filled to the brim with 920 wonderful students. Many of our students come from military families who work at the surrounding bases. In our state's ranking system, our high-performing school has been ranked as a top ten high school in North Carolina for ten consecutive years. I teach a portion of these amazing students in my visual arts courses.
My students have so much inspiration for creating art right here in our own backyard!
We are fortunate that our school is located within eyesight of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and a short bus ride to the Atlantic Ocean.
My Project
My students love to get outside and explore nature. While we are outside drawing we are able to incorporate all types of inspiration from our environment in our artwork. Students will study insects and create diagrammatic drawings of various beetles, butterflies, and other insects for our project. Having the plastic mounted insect collection here in class will help students draw accurate proportions in their renderings without removing any insects from their natural habitat.
After students learn about insects and create their own works of art based on their scientific drawings, we will display their insect-inspired artwork in the halls of our school for everyone to see.
I know my students will gain a greater appreciation and understanding for insects by studying all of the intricate details they see in real life. I know it will boost their self-esteem and confidence when other teachers and peers comment on their awesome insect works of art.
