My Students

For this project, the students we will service are winners of our annual District 5 spelling bee. Every year, each school submits a competitor for each grade band to participate in a year-end bee, and the winner for every grade receives a Kindle, as well as an Amazon gift certificate when possible to kickstart their digital library. Our district services students in Central Harlem, the majority of whom are Black, Latino, and Middle Eastern. Native languages other than English spoken in our schools include Spanish, French, Wolof, and Arabic. More and more, our schools work alongside charter schools, sharing practices and looking for every way to ensure equity and access to instructional materials.

My Project

Our district-wide spelling bee is the culmination of an exhaustive process that prepares our most accomplished spellers along every step of the process. Along with the praise and intangible accolades afforded their achievement, we like to honor their victory with a something that will help carry their work into their home life.

Help us instill these kids with a lifelong love of reading by getting our winners Kindles to carry with them wherever they go.

We firmly believe some of the best discussions in the world happen as a response to literature and printed information. Help us ensure that those discussions occur in traditional instructional settings and throughout the course of their everyday lives.
