This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Help out fifteen kindergartners eager to learn to read! I teach kindergarten in a low income area. Many of the parents want to help their child learn, but lack the resources to do so. My school participates in a Teacher Home-Visit Program. As I have been visiting homes I am finding out that many of my students come from homes that do not have books. The parents are very excited that I send home a paper book each week. They tell me stories about how they sit down with their children and read these paper books over and over. It saddens me that the only exposure my students have to books at home, are these paper decodable readers. I want to implement a program in my classroom called BEE a Reader. I am encouraging my class to read 10,000 books this year. This is going to be difficult for them if they do not have books at home. I will be sending home paper print out books home with my students each day; however these books are not as engaging as real books.
I would like to encourage my students to read or listen to a book a night, five books a week. Each week I will have the students return a book log saying they've read five books, when my students have read 25 books I would like to give them an easy reader book to keep. This would encourage them to read and provide my students with books at home. This is where you come in; I need easy reader books that I can give my students to keep. I am requesting 45 books; this would allow each of my students the opportunity to earn 3 books. With your help I can encourage my students to BEE a Reader!
