I am a 4th grade teacher. My crew consists 25 students. My class is very diverse and consists of many English Language Learners. Our neighborhood is in the center of Sioux Falls and consists of many low income families. Our school is a Title I school and 86% of our students get free or reduced rate lunches. Our school is fortunate enough to get the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable program that provides a healthy snack every day for every student. This year we have started providing breakfast in the classroom to make sure all students have breakfast and are ready to learn and do not have to worry about being hungry. We also receive backpacks (food bags) so the students have some food at home for the weekend. Even though life may be rough for my students, they come to school eager to learn.
These books that I have selected will widen the variety of books that I have in my classroom library. Over the summer, I read, "The Book Whisperer" by Donalyn Miller. After reading her book, I was inspired to revamp my classroom library.
After spending time in my library, I realized that I needed more Science Fiction, Poetry, and Traditional Literature.
I have chosen titles such as "H.I.V.E" and Storm Runners to entice more students. I want ALL students to love reading. If I do not have all of these genres of books, a student may be missing out on their favorite genre. I want to reach each reader in my classroom and make them into a Wild Reader.
