My students need to develop cooperative play skills. Games like, The Ladybug Game, HI-HO Cherry-o, and Roll and Play Board Game will facilitate these social skills and more.
By the end of the school year I hope my students are able to engage their peers in a cooperative play setting which will allow them to build rapport and develop friendships. The biggest challenge to achieving this is the difficulty my students have with social engagement, and expressive language.
The school I teach at is in an older part of town.
The community is diverse both socially and economically. The students who attend my school are the children of people who initially began their educational careers here as well. Families who attend my school exhibit a strong sense of commitment to learning and to the school. My students are faced with academic, social and behavioral deficits, and having a strong support system is necessary for success. Developing social skills through play is one step being taken to support their needs.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will be used to teach social skills such as turn taking, sharing, initiating, and requesting. The cooperative play setting lends itself to following directions, using strategy, being a gracious winner and remaining in good spirits when things aren't in your favor. These games will be the catalyst for joining my students who are identified as special needs to students considered typically developing. Through play, I am teaching tolerance and acceptance of differences.
This project will make my students' lives better because it will allow them to develop the skills necessary to initiate games, conversation, and develop friendships.
This project will provide valuable learning through fun. They will learn lessons which truly will serve them throughout their lives.
