Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each day I walk into my classroom and am greeted by 30 wonderful 6th graders. They are so eager to learn. But, many of my students have deficits in their phonics knowledge that prevent them from decoding texts. This project will help my kids to become strong decoders so that they can enjoy reading.
My students are absolutely incredible.
Sixth graders are at an incredible age. They are on the cusp of adulthood but still hold within them the innate curiosity that is so unique to children. For the vast majority of my students, childhood has not been easy. Most live in high-poverty households where they have experienced some of the worst side effects of the growing gap between the rich and the poor in the United States. But, with all that they have been through, my kids are resilient and they want to learn. Every day they come into class ready to take on new challenges. I am truly lucky to be with them each and every day.
My Project
The Wilson Reading Program entitled Just Words is a directed decoding program for older students. It is very difficult to teach older students to decode when they have this deficit because students are supposed to learn how to decode (i.e. read and sound out words) in the younger grades. By the time students get to sixth grade, decoding programs are no longer applicable to them and are too "baby-ish." Furthermore, the rigor of academic standards requires students to have mastered decoding already by this age so that they can move on to analysis. The gap that my students have in their decoding skills makes mastering grade level standards nearly impossible. Through the use of these Student Kits and the implementation of the Wilson Reading Program, I intend to help my students to fill this gap so that they can experience success in school rather than fall further behind because they are struggling readers.
Imagine being 12 years old and being unable to sound out a multi-syllabic word.
This is something that my students experience every day, and it makes them terrified to read. My students are not culpable for this gap in their education, and they are suffering every day because, somewhere along the line, they slipped through the cracks and did not learn "how" to read. Giving my students access to these skills will truly transform their lives and the way they interact with the reading process.
