This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

The students submitting this request are from my chemistry courses. There are many other places that they would like to be than in the classroom. Given any reason not to be here, they would jump at the chance. Many have jobs and other responsibilities that make school a low priority and boring.

Many of the students in this district have chronic absences and attend less than 85% of the district school days. They have GPA's in the range of 1.3-1.9. This means that even the local community college isn't a possibility for them for admission and many students have no goals or ambitions beyond high school. They are frequently in ISS for a variety of reasons, so even when they are in school they are not always in class. Many fail every single class they are in, year after year.

For a long time science was seen as a "smart people" class or a hands-off class. In our classroom we are changing those preconceived notions! By making a classroom a warm, interesting and engaging space we are turning students around who normally wouldn't come to school. The students come in for this class and stay for the day.

My students have lost interest in learning. It is just not fun. They have especially lost interest in learning by the traditional way. They prefer to learn while being engaged in something entertaining. I have shown them some of the interactive simulations and they actually begin to have fun while they are learning. Learning happens while playing a game and get to explore for themselves. These students will care more and maintain engagement when they like what they are asked to do. By using these Chromebooks in class and in labs my students will become better problem solvers. It will allow them to access resources that otherwise would not be available. They will be able to play educational games. These types of activities will engage them as well as increase their determination to do well. This is because they will be able to have fun while learning. Using Chromebooks in class will better help prepare them for college.

In Their Own Words

I want to have fun in class. School should be fun not boring. We have so many things we need to learn and remember. It is hard to stay focused. Using the Chromebooks will be fun. We can learn while we are having fun. When we use Chromebooks in other classes it makes the day go by faster.

Our teacher chose one of us from each class she has. She said she wants kids who are very responsible. After we get them we will be the ones in charge of keeping them nice. In some other classes, kids do not respect the things we have. Sometimes they break things because they don't care. Not in our class!

Our school does not have a lot of computers. Some teachers have them but some do not. We all like classes that have fun things to do. If all of our teachers used Chromebooks it would be more enjoyable to come to school. If we get new Chromebooks for our teacher we will get to use them all year long. Then she will have them for other classes for years to come.
