As Barack Obama states, "Computers are going to be part a big part of our future ... and that future is yours to shape." As educators, it is our responsibility to prepare our students to be productive members of the twenty-first century in the field of computer science.
I teach a dynamic bunch of enthusiastic and creative fourth-grade students who will prepare for a bright future.
My biggest challenge is having technology resources for all children to prepare them for jobs in computer science. My goal is to try to develop a small set of classroom chromebooks in my classroom, one chromebook at a time. The purpose of having this chromebook is to teach computer coding using the Hour of Code Website and others. First, I want to teach my students to read and write code with a computer and then, I plan to take it a step further using robots. I teach a multicultural fourth-grade class in a Title I school with limited resources. By the end of the year, I expect to see my students' reading, math, science, and social studies levels to rise.
Hardi Partovi states, "And so in this day and age, computer science is no longer just vocational for getting a job, in this day and age, computer science is completely foundational for any job you may want to have in the next 20 to thirty years. And so the real question is, Can our public education system evolve?" This quote resonates with me because as supporters of our students' future, we need to embrace technology head on and enable our public education system to continue to evolve. Computer science teaches you more than just using a computer. It teaches you to become inquisitive thinkers as you collaborate with peers and solve real world problems through application as you learn through failure. Resilience is needed in any job.
My students need a Chromebook to complete STEM activities such as, Scratch Junior, Tynker, and Wonder Workshop.
Computer science needs to be taught to everyone because technology is changing the world around us. We need to teach children how to get computers to do unusual things like coding a computer to make music, inventing new things, and sharing our creations with the world. Computer science is a vital role in the technology industry. We need to put our students in the "driver's seat" as they become innovators and entrepreneurs of tomorrow in the field of STEM. Students need to be encouraged not to just become a computer user, but they need to become makers and doers as they have the opportunity to tinker with hands on activities. Let's ring in the beginning of the school year with a sparkling Chromebook for our bright innovators of tomorrow.
