Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Entering a school for the very first time may be very overwhelming and scary for kindergartners. As Spanish as their first language, speaking absolutely no word of English and never having the privilege of receiving formal education before, can be quite terrifying as a 5-year-old. It will be my third year as a kindergarten teacher at a charter school in West Dallas this school year. The students come from low-income families and many are ELL with Spanish as their first language.
These are the students I will be teaching!
As a kindergarten teacher, it is very important to be able to provide the students with a strong foundation, especially in their very first year of formal classroom instruction. Many of the students come in with no formal written or speaking skills in both their native language as well as in English.
I want to make a difference in the lives of my students and show them the power of learning! I want my students to receive the education they deserve so one day they can look back and say kindergarten was the year I will never forget!
My Project
Writing is a way to express your imagination and invite your readers into your own creative space. I want my scholars to be able to receive sentence builder centers with visuals, which will not only help increase their vocabulary; however, it will also help them understand the correct structure of a sentence. They need these important skills, so they are able to become strong, independent writers.
Many of my scholars are ELLs and they do not have the skill set to write or understand the structure of writing.
I want my scholars to be able to express their opinions and use their imagination. I believe writing is so important, especially in the primary grades. They get the opportunity to learn how to write personal narratives and share their amazing stories with one another.
I also want my scholars to have a better understanding of how the writing process works. With kindergartners, visuals and modeling are very important. However, if scholars are able to each have an individualized Writing Process Folder, they will be able to "own" their writing and feel their work has value. I already can imagine their excitement, when they are able to use their own materials to create masterpieces.
As a Title 1 School, we do not have many funded resources; however, myself and my kindergartners appreciate all the help and support we can get!
