Hi! I am a fifth grade teacher at a high needs school in North Carolina. I teach at a Title I school where the students often lack the basic materials at home to complete assignments. I am a Language Arts and Social Studies teacher for 40 students, including several ESL and Exceptional Children.
Imagine teaching about government and the history of our country with no materials except for a text book. Textbooks are not materials that motivate this group of students to learn; they need more interactive materials to make them engaged learners. Learning about our government and the history that led to our government is extremely important in becoming well-developed citizens who are willing and able to contribute to society.
I am requesting a variety of materials related to the US government and our country's history. With these materials, I am providing my students with interactive experiences with this curriculum. Biographies and non-fiction texts are beneficial to my students because it exposes them to a variety of book genres and integrates Social Studies and Reading skills. I am requesting a United States resource kit as well, which has a bunch of hands-on materials that allows my students to work together in small groups to learn more about our government.
Your help will ensure that my students become well-developed citizens, with a wide spectrum of knowledge about the history of the United States. You will make it possible for my students to become engaged learners and take charge in their civic education. Learning about our government is extremely important because they are the future of this country. They must know where the country has been to know where they can take it in the future. Social Studies is often a subject that is overlooked because it is not tested in 5th grade which is a shame. I am working to show my students the significance of our government and civics education.
