My students need to learn all facets of leading change in the world, from concept through funding, which are outlined in this book through the biographies of teens who have already been successful changemakers.

My Students

Service Learning is a "Leadership and Community Engagement" course that is designed to give high school students both hands-on community service opportunities as well as content and instruction to guide them into becoming career and community leaders today and into the future.

These students are willing and ready to learn, lead, and give to others; but there isn't a "textbook" to teach from nor a solid base of student-friendly materials to engage or inspire them.

Our district is low income and currently 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Student-purchased materials are not an option.

My Project

Being able to provide current and future Service Learning Class students a copy of the book "Be a Changemaker: How to start something that matters" will offer each student the opportunity to engage with the content and with the stories of the teens included at their own pace. The book is set up so that each chapter covers a specific aspect of creating an action project while also describing a specific teen or group of teens and their causes/organizations as examples.

Giving teens other teens as role models would allow them to visualize themselves as successful agents of social change; a role few have seen up close but all are open to exploring through our class.
