My students need on-level fiction chapter books to promote fluency and comprehension along with non fiction articles to increase knowledge of current events.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a person who just started her career two years ago, I work in a very high poverty, high crime, and low-income school district. My students are all very different and some have had to experience many things that I can not even begin to understand. Many of my students come to school hungry from not eating much over the weekend and others have to walk miles just to get to school each and every day. Many of my students dread nights, weekends, and holidays because they don't know the situations that await them at home. My students love being at school, because they know it is one place that they can feel safe and secure. These kids are a big bundle of joy. No matter their home situations they always have a smile on their face. They are excited about school and are eager to learn.
My Project
Although I have been teaching for 2 years, this is my first year teaching reading . Our classroom has very few books and the little that we have are damaged, outdated, and are not appealing to the students interests. My students need access to interesting and exciting books that will broaden both their knowledge and love of reading . I have selected these books and magazines such as TIME Magazine, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Harry Potter, and more in order to balance quality literature and fun story lines.
Each set of books will read in a small group in order to promote comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary.
Instilling a love of reading at this young age will greatly benefit the students through school and into thier future careers.
