Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am so lucky to work with a wonderfully diverse community of learners who are committed to finding ways to follow their dreams. We have many students who are English language learners, many who come from low-income families and many who come from different neighborhoods to access the specialized programs we offer at our school.
I work with exceptional students, because who they are is beyond your typical expectations.
They are unique. I run the moderate to severe special education classroom, serving students with intellectual disabilities, orthopedic impairments, other health impairments and autism.
My Project
The materials I am requesting for this project include three bicycles with training wheels we can use to help our students learn how to ride a bike! We are working to find ways to make the bikes accessible, and will not only use them during the school year, but hope to incorporate them into our summer learning program as well. It is difficult for our students to learn how to ride with the same opportunities as other children because of their adaptive needs, so we want to be able to work with them more directly and offer a greater level of support. To do this, we need bikes specifically for our classroom to create real one on one opportunities for learning.
Our students deserve the same opportunities as any other student.
Having a set of new bicycles we can bring in allows them to be more active, to develop a sense of independence and to take pride in their new skills! We will incorporate a new mode of kinesthetic learning that addresses sensory needs and teaches a new skill at the same time. I am so excited to offer them this opportunity, and I hope you are as well.
