My students need materials to help kickstart their imaginations for writing. A writing center would be implemented in my classroom, complete with a console to hold materials, writing prompt kits, and flexible seating.
I teach in a small town where the majority of students' families fall below the poverty line. Students come from diverse backgrounds and home lives, and, as a result, many of them do not get adequate help at home. For many students, a growing education is their best shot at overcoming poverty.
Students who are not reading on grade level by the end of 2nd grade are four times more likely to drop out of school.
Part of our daily routine in the classroom includes independent reading, word work, listening to reading, and phonics instruction. Students also love to write, which also aids in nourishing a child's reading skills. Teaching a child to write also teaches them more about text structure, grammar, and vocabulary. As a result, students who are better writers become better readers.
My Project
My students have a writing focus wall with anchor charts and a word wall. The writing console would serve as a base under the bulletin board to hold materials such as paper, writing utensils, and writing prompt kits and games. Flexible seating cushions would be stored nearby so that students could easily access them.
With these new materials, students would be excited to write because they would have clear direction, fun and engaging writing activities, and a comfortable space to record their thoughts.
Students would have access to this writing center each and every day with the understanding that writing helps us become better readers.
