My students need 30 monthly copies of Scholastic Art to help support visual art literacy in our third, fourth and fifth grade classrooms while learning about the world of art!
Students at S.E. School are approximately half military dependents and half students from a poor, rural area of North Carolina.
Parents of our students are often deployed all over the world protecting our freedom!
Most of the other students are being raised by grandparents or single parent homes.
Our school is not in a real community as it is surrounded by farmland and tobacco fields, with the nearest major museum being about 2 1/2 hours away.
We have about 470 students in our school. We are a Title 1 school-wide learning environment. We are also a Stephen Covey Leader In Me Lighthouse School, which means our students meet the criteria of being great leaders preparing for the future!
My Project
The students at my school are military dependents as well as students from a rural farm area in Jacksonville, NC. At least half of our students families work and are deployed from Camp Lejune Marine Base. A lot of our students are also ESL (English as a second language). We need to improve our literacy proficiency at our school. Since our students are transient, it is hard for them to succeed while moving from place to place and going to school in different school systems. Having this magazine will help students connect to Art (which they are all interested in) and help with literacy skills at the same time. I am taking a workshop now to help learn more about how to integrate literacy strategies in my art class. I will also have students working in cooperative groups together going over the material that is in the Scholastic Art magazine. The magazine has text about Artistic styles and Artists of the past and present. It also features student artists, which will help my students understand they can have a career in the arts and/or will give them more confidence that what they have to say artistically speaking can and will make a difference! Having 30 copies will help with my large 5th grade classes that have 30 or more students. The copies can be shared monthly by students in grades 3-5!
