Each morning, we start with community circle where students share various announcements including current events. With the magazine subscription this year, my students will be better informed about current events and have a broader perspective of the world.
My students are interested in the world outside of their immediate home and school community, they are always sharing ideas of what they could do to change the world for the better.
My class is a diverse group of students coming from various backgrounds including special needs and English Language Learners. They are enthusiastic learners that are interested in a variety topics and working on projects such as creating museums multiple times during the year to teach others.
My school is a Title I K-5 school with an English Language Development program. We work hard to provide students with many different experiences including track, chess club, and inviting many different guest speakers.
This project will allow my students to become activists, think about the community and the world. My students will be able to be informed on current events then research different perspectives. They will then be able to write an informational essay, participate in discussions and debates.
My students will also be able to use the news articles as mentor texts to learn how to become their own journalists and activists.
I hope that by reading, learning and keeping up with current events, students will become inspired to make changes within their local community. Also, they will later become involved within a larger community and causes that influence the future. I also hope that this project will inspire students to be come journalists, think about how information is presented to readers.
