Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The school I teach at serves a diverse, low-income neighborhood. 97% of students receive free or discounted lunches based on the income of their families, therefore my students struggle to bring basic supplies to school. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Most of the students are not proficient in the core subjects, whether because they never spoke English at home, or because they have not been the benefactors of the support they need.
Despite the hardships that some of them face, my students still come to school and try their best; and they deserve the best that I can give them.
Efforts in response to this situation are as diverse as the students. The school receives Federal Title I funding due to its Title I status. In an effort to reach students where they are, teachers work together to coordinate lesson plans and create small groups within their classrooms to best meet the needs of all students. Before- and after-school instruction is also offered. Even the food bank visits weekly to distribute free fruits and veggies.
My Project
I am requesting comfy chairs for my classroom's library and books to pique the interest of my students. The initial attraction to books is more difficult with the constant pull of audio and video media. By providing students with books that interest them, we can open up a whole new world to them. They could insert themselves into Phoney Bone's schemes, tag along with Ivy and Bean as friends, and search for treasure in Wings of Fire, all while curled up in a cozy chair in their classroom library.
These items would help my students develop a lifelong love of reading.
The books, both nonfiction and fiction, will engage students in reading. This variety of books will accommodate readers of all levels. These books will encourage them to explore new ideas, develop further understanding, and grow their love for reading.
