I need professional training to be a better dual language teacher!
I teach second grade in a one way dual language program, which means that the majority of the students come from homes where they have some exposure to Spanish (via parents, grandparents, etc). Unfortunately, unless students are taught in school to actually read, write, and speak in Spanish, the language is lost within two generations.
They are to curious, cute, and energetic.
They are eager to learn and to play. They love puppets and crafts. 80% percent of my students receive free and reduced lunch, and most are 2nd or 3rd generation immigrants from Latin America.
Though I have been a public school teacher working with Spanish speaking students for the past 5 years, this is my first year teaching in a dual language program, where 75% of my instruction is in Spanish.
I am seeking funds so that I might be able to attend two professional development workshops led by the pre-eminent scholars in the field of dual language education.
Specifically, these workshops will help my hone my skills a a teacher of Spanish writing and reading. Furthermore, the workshops will provide me with resources to help me build better bridges in my teaching between the Spanish and English language for my emergent readers in both languages!
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
