Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

In second grade student's authentic writing develops. Students learn the power of expressing themselves through the written word. In the upcoming year I will be implementing a system of letter writing in order to practice writing skills as well as to build a sense of community among my 27 second grade students. They will write to their friends and to those with whom they have conflict. We will practice conflict resolution in our letters as we encourage and congratulate one another. The one thing lacking is a mailbox for these letters. The requested mailbox has space for every student, providing them a specific destination for each letter they write. Every student will benefit from this mailbox. In their Englewood neighborhood, students often learn to express themselves with words or fists, but writing will provide a positive alternative that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. My second grade students will forever remember this mailbox as a place where they developed their writing skills while learning to communicate.
