This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are smart and need a strong understanding of social justice from different perspectives. It really matters to them. As a class, we just finished reading "Long Way Down" by Jason Reynolds (thanks to donors like you). Themes conveyed in the book include loyalty, gun violence, and societal rules and is told through the eyes of the main character, Will Holloman, a black teenager from the inner-city.

Inequality is a topic that 11th graders need to discuss in a safe environment so that they can be informed community members.

My students need to read and talk about ethnicity, the law, and human interactions. They want to have a vehicle for writing about important topics that impact them.

"To Kill A Mockingbird" teaches the value of empathy and understanding differences. The novel offers excellent learning opportunities such as discussion, role-playing, and historical research, allowing students to delve into these issues and appreciate them.

After reading our last novel, I wanted to give my students a historical reference for social justice.

"To Kill A Mockingbird" was written from the perspective of a 6-year-old girl whose father is portrayed as a hero for defending a black man in court. This book is often taught in class so that students understand systemic racism, which will open up some important conversations in our classroom.
