My Students

I teach an amazing group of 5 to 6 year old learners in a rural town located in southern West Virginia, which has been devastated by a shift in the local economy. Our entire district receives free breakfast and lunch and sponsors a backpack program to provide underprivileged families with food during weekends and holidays. Despite the surrounding conditions associated with the area, my students are eager to learn and come to school each day with a desire to grow their minds and learn something new.

My classroom is a place of wonder and discovery in which students are encouraged to think outside the four basic walls of our classroom.

As their teacher, I strive to make my classroom a “Happy Place” where students can leave their worries at the door and just ‘play to learn”.

Field trips, libraries, and museums are simply not possible; therefore, I do my best to bring these things inside the walls of my classroom. Whether we pretend to fly to Mexico for a Holidays around the World Celebration or create life-size paper animals to transform the room as we study various habitats, student success and achievement is my foremost priority.

My Project

I am requesting a diverse set of age appropriate books celebrating the contributions and sacrifices made by African American history makers. I feel as though such reading materials will encourage children’s natural curiosity and start valuable conversations about the world around them.

Because our community is not immensely diverse, I feel it is important to lay the groundwork for acceptance of and respect for diversity when kids are very young.

Students will participate in read alouds discussing and celebrating the art, music, inventions, intellectual contributions, and political accomplishments of African Americans.

Art supplies containing crayons, markers, and construction paper in multicultural shades are being asked for in order for students to participate in a hands-on project based learning activity. Students will pick a person from our discussion and create an artifact to display in our "African American History Museum," in which students throughout our school can view.
