Help me teach my students today to be the problem solvers of tomorrow! I am an elementary school librarian serving kindergarten through sixth grade students who mostly belong to low income single parent families that live in housing projects. I currently teach character education and library skills. I would love to teach my students how to be logical thinkers and problem solvers.
The state of Mississippi is implementing the MCT2 this year. The MCT2 is a much more rigorous test than any assessment instrument used by our state in the past. It measures the students' abilities to think logically and to form problem solving strategies, which is a shift in focus from just measuring the students' knowledge of content and computation.
"Brainy" toys, games, and puzzles are a great way to develop logic and strategy skills while having fun. Squzzles are colorful two sided puzzles. Colorku is sudoku in color. Students have to place a single ball of color in every row, in every column, and in every 3x3 box without repeating a color. Tessellations will challenge students’ geometric problem solving skills. In Make 7, students take turns dropping colored tiles down slots to create a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal row that adds up to 7 while trying to block an opponent. Gambit, Blokus, Gobblet, Mancala, and Batik are all award-winning games of strategy that can be utilized by a wide age range. With you’re help, not only would students perform better on the state's standardized test, but they would also carry over these critical thinking and problem solving skills into their home environments.
The resources that I have requested are usually reserved for students in gifted programs. Most of my students have never had the opportunity to benefit from such fun, educational “toys”. Your donations will make it possible for every student of every ability level to develop the skills necessary to think creatively, logically, and constructively thus enriching every aspect of their lives.
