I am the language arts teacher of students in an eighth grade inclusion setting. Inclusion is a fairly new concept in the NYC public schools. I have twenty four students and two co-teachers. Thirteen of our students have special needs, while the remainder are of the general education population. Our school is a Title I school. It is located in the heart of East New York, a Brooklyn neighborhood plagued with poverty, drugs, and crime. Despite the view of housing projects from our classroom windows, my students are eager to learn. It is imperative for our children to see the world from a different angle, for most have never been outside of ENY. I want my students to see Beauty and The Beast on Broadway to supplement our reading of Beauty by Robin McKinley. I want them to experience a day at the theater. This ties into our unit on themes, figurative language, and symbolism in literature and greatly benefits my visual-spatial and auditory learners. The only materials needed for this project are the tickets. My students, as all children do, deserve to dress up and leave their neighborhood (and worries) behind in order to enjoy life and the rich culture that abounds.
