Beautifully Poetic, Artistically Creative! Painting a Poem
Help me give my students authentic Japanese Sumi watercolor brushes, India inks, colorful liquid watercolors, charcoal powder, pastels, cold-pressed watercolor paper and a funnel set to create a poetically inspired Haiku painting.
When Anne of Green Gables once said, "It's delightful when your imaginations come true, isn't it?", I suppose she was speaking with an artists heart. My students are encouraged to take their ideas & "run with it", to let their imaginations literally come true in their minds & in their art!
Traditionally, they come from a rather rural-low income farmland county in the heart of our rolling hills and beautiful mountain home, West Virginia.
As their teacher, I'm inspired by their creativity, imagination and ideas on a daily basis. We're fortunate to have so many bright, young artistic minds in our school! By working together, sharing thoughts & achieving goals, a wonderful, positive learning environment has been created. With such a rich heritage for the arts, there could be no better place to begin their artistic path than here!
Students in my classroom are often taken away from their cozy, "comfort zone" and immersed into a time and place all entirely new and they love it! When you begin to take a closer look at what they're doing, you'll see all the subtle transformations that have and are continually taking place, both in their lives and in their art.
My Project
Envision for a moment a clear, mountain stream nestled in the wilds of Montana: in the distance songbirds sing in perfect accord, accompanying the softness of the breeze as it whispers through the trees. Got the picture? Can you imagine, in your mind, this place and time? Could you paint the scene, and place yourself in it? Visualization is key to broadening and building imagination, and through combining elements of descriptive writing with Haiku poetry and the ancient Japanese art of Sumi painting, students are given avenues for expressing their thoughts, feelings and senses in words, while creatively painting a poem. The resources and materials requested such as water color sets and water brush pen sets, will help add a level of authenticity to the project, while giving the students the opportunity to learn about the traditional techniques, methods, applications and procedures.
Our classroom will benefit from this project by enabling students the opportunity to experience a broadened and deeper understanding for the Japanese culture with the addition of watercolor brushes, paints, paper, charcoal, inks, techniques and concepts.
