Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a Special Day Class. My students need a lot of encouragement and motivation to perform their day to day assignments. Learning is a very difficult, tedious and challenging task for most of my students. So I try to make it fun. I decorate my class with colorful charts and student work.
I teach in a neighborhood where the students are very enthusiastic learners.
They have learned to make do with very little. They come from families that want very much to see their children succeed. The parents want their children to have opportunities that they themselves may not have had. My school tries to do its best for the students but in this economy it is not always possible to find funds for supplies that the students need, so we teachers turn to DonorsChoose to aid us in this quest. It's worth the effort we teachers put in just to see the sweet smiles that light up the little faces when they see new materials come into their class. The students work very hard at their tasks in my class. This year almost all of my students turned in their homework everyday. I think my students deserve a better learning environment than they have at present.
Our classroom has a ceiling that leaked a few months ago. It has been fixed where it does not leak anymore but has left ceiling tiles that don't look attractive. We don't have the best lighting in our class. Our floor tiles are broken and our room looks old and worn. The only way to brighten our surroundings is to put up attractive posters and colorful charts.
My Project
I decorate my class with student work and motivational posters, and change them monthly. Now some of our posters don't look so new. The Colorful Owl Talkers will make our room attractive and look like a fun learning place where students want to spend 6 hours everyday. Because my students love to do chores I assign classroom jobs. We are requesting a new job chart to track student responsibilities. The electric pencil sharpener will replace our current one, which doesn't doesn't work so well. I had to throw out our rug this year as it was becoming a health hazard. So we need a new Fun at School Washable Rug.
Surely students need a cheerful, fun, attractive learning atmosphere to spend part of their lives everyday?
I try to help by making my class walls as pleasing to the eye as possible. I put up student work, behavior charts, job charts and other motivational posters to help make their learning environment not such a drab place to be in. The rug and posters will brighten up my room and make my students want to come to class.
