This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am the Cheerleading coach for Chalmers School of Excellence. I have girls from 5th thru 8th grade. The team meets twice a week after school. The girls are growing up in low-income and crime infested neighborhoods. They live in neighborhoods with no role models besides the teacher that provide service to them daily.
“Nothing will work unless you do” by Maya Angelou is a great quote to describe the mindset of our cheerleaders.
They are required to keep a minimum of 3.0 gpa. They are encouraged to have no detentions or reflections in the Dean’s office. They are encourage to be role models In our school.
My Project
I have coach cheerleading for several years. The majority of our items are at least 5 years old. We can use the shoes for our upcoming competition. It is important we look our best during competition. They will receive a score for their appearance.
This program has impacted the lives of many girls in our surrounding community. My first set of cheerleaders are in their second year of college.
The program holds them accountable for their academics as well as their behavior during the course of their day.
Our team is one of the most popular sport teams at Chalmers. I have at least 40 girls trying out every year to be apart of our team. The girls are pick base on their performance and athletic skills. We are apart of a family. We share our trials and our accomplishments.
