Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a School Counselor for an alternative education high school, we service students ages 14-25. Some of our seniors are graduating a year or two, or more behind their original graduation year. We are an independent study program and our students depend on technology which they access at school. They have been through a lot of obstacles and hardships in order to graduate. A lot of our students are parents, sole providers of their families, or students who have given up on themselves multiple times and are trying to push through.
With this Global Pandemic of Covid-19, their senior year and graduation have been impacted.
Due to our school closure and limited Chromebooks we are unable to provide every student with a Chromebook. If we can get a donation of 5 Chromebooks for our seniors to finish their schooling via online it will benefit them and keep them motivated to finish High School and not give up on themselves. I am committed to advocate for our students, our school staff and I have donated diapers, baby wipes, formula, and bus passes to help our students meet their essential needs. With your donation, we can close this achievement gap.
My Project
Since students can't come to school or to the libraries, and can't afford a computer at home, we want to close this gap. By helping at least 5 Seniors we can help them finish High School online. They can type up their essays, create Google Slides, video chat with their teacher and have email access to email work. All of our staff and teachers are working from home and are collecting work via email or Google Classroom.
Our students are not used to working remotely and our seniors, in particular, are struggling to turn in their last 10 credits in order to finish High School.
These Chromebooks will help them turn in those last credits in order for them to complete all coursework. With Chromebooks, they can search resources for their coursework, apply for FAFSA, apply to different colleges.
As a counselor, we do virtual college tours at school. Seniors can connect and feel a sense of accomplishment if they are able to finish their college application for the Fall of 2020.
