My students need yoga mats and a yoga program because it is important they are proactive in managing with their stress.
This project expired on May 20, 2018.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
Our students spend anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours per day commuting to our unique, art-infused & social justice oriented school. We tend to enroll students who have been bullied or need a community-like setting where the adults are able to touch base frequently and keep a close eye on their health- emotional, mental, physical, etc. Our staff consists of 4 core teachers, 2 special education teachers, a full-time social worker, an office manager, and our executive director. With this small staff, one can only imagine the various roles we all take on each day-tech specialist, lunch server, dean, attendance monitor, nurse, etc. Our staff is dedicated to our students and proudly take on such tasks because it is what is best for them.
"When teens consistently practice mindfulness, it lowers rates of anxiety & depression and leads to better sleep, stronger relationships, and increased self-awareness, all of which can go a long way toward ameliorating the impact of stress" (http://leftbrainbuddha.com/mindfulness-for-teens/).
As a result of consistently doing yoga, students will be given the opportunity to break down the barrier of mental distress in order to focus on their future by being more engaged in their school work.
I am the school social worker, and I teach elective courses. My plan is to use these materials to give students the experience of de-stressing and learning what it feels like to do self care in order to be their best selves.
Items we are hoping to receive include 18 BalanceFrom Go Yoga All Purpose Anti-Tear Exercise Yoga Mats and One 3-Week Yoga Retreat Workout Program. With the infusion of these items into our program, we feel we can better meet the needs of our students.
