Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At our school, we are starting fresh as an innovation model school. Our ELL school is driven by Achievement, Wonder, Empathy, Collaboration, and Advocacy. We put these core values in all of our programs and activities. Our mission states, "Together, we ensure all learners achieve excellence in academics and the arts, while simultaneously empowering kids, families, and staff in our Montbello community as diverse and equitable changemakers." Our students are eager to use music to further this mission. We can’t do it, without your support!
My Project
This is our first year as a re-start innovation model school that is ELL. We will be exploring various Spanish-speaking cultures and their music this year using these percussion instruments. How amazing will it be, to not only learn about the folk music of the various peoples, but to actually learn to play simple arrangements of this music? It is my goal to use our music classroom as a tool to empower students for Achievement, Wonder, Empathy, Collaboration, and Advocacy.
Nearly all of our students come from second-language and low-income homes.
Our students come from a resilient community that has a history of proficient percussionists. However, our local high school was shut down a few years back, and the drum line which was the heart and soul, was disbanded as well. We would like to use hand drums and drum circle activities to tap into the drumming legacy of our community, and to bring the steady drumming heart and soul back to life.
The students will be able to explore many different cultures through the percussion lens. Our students will make a direct connection to the history of drumming in their immediate community. We will invite local percussionist to join us or even teach us in music class. The students will perform!
Students will be proud of themselves, their history, their school, and their community. Drum stands for Discipline, Respect, Understanding, and Music. These drums will motivate our student to attend school, and will empower the DRUM core values throughout all aspects of their educational careers and lives.
