My Students

My students are the movers and shakers of the next generation in this rural town. They live in the same town that inspired me to become a third generation teacher to this school. We are a challenged rural school serving some military families with over 60% Free and Reduced lunches for students. Backpacks with food are sent home with needy students each weekend. Despite the economic challenge they face, these students are bright and willing learners. They know that education will improve the quality of life for them and their families.

My Project

Everyone loves to drum! Drums can be used to teach beat, rhythm reading/playing and ensemble playing. Students range in age from four to twelve in my elementary music classroom. Having to hold the drum while playing makes it difficult and frustrating for some students, especially younger ones.

These drum stands will enable younger students to experience success in playing the djembe drums by holding them at the right height for playing but off of the floor for good sound.

We currently have three drums without stands. With the addition of these stands, we will be able to have 6 more students join in to play for a total of 32 students able to play at one time. My largest class is 32 students.
