My students have found a place of safety, acceptance, and community within our small school. They thrive here, where individual needs are met, where the teachers know their hobbies and interests and build close relationships with each student, and where self-expression is celebrated and encouraged. Because of that, we have a community of incredibly talented, compassionate kids.
My students walk into our school full of passion and a desire to make a difference.
They strive for a sense of success and self-worth in our community; something they struggled with in their previous schools. Here, they empower one another.
My Project
This field trip will bring my students to the Park Square Theatre in St. Paul, Minnesota to see "The Diary of Anne Frank" brought to life on stage. We are in the middle of an intensive study of the Holocaust, and are exploring several different mediums to help students grasp this historical event. We have read a book, we have read essays and poetry, we are examining art - and we are pursuing a chance to see part of this history before their eyes.
The theater affords an opportunity to be immersed in the past so they can watch it unfold.
By bringing students to this particular play, it is my hope that they will start to view the sea of people who died in the Holocaust as individual lives rather than as incomprehensible numbers. "The Diary of Anne Frank" is more than a book or a play. It is a young woman's voice speaking honestly and directly about hate, and speaking about being a young person in a very large world. She creates a connection between students and the harsh reality of the Holocaust. Seeing this acted out before them will, I believe, give them an experience that shapes their view of humanity and their role in improving it.
