Help me give my students supplies like stuff a ball, chew toys, and a dog pet bed ,for our therapy dog, to engage with our therapy dog after a student melt-down, or to just sit and talk to our therapy dog who listens without interrupting or judging!
When was the last time you had a dog attending class at your middle school? I have 12 students in my learning disabilities 7th grade math class. This is our second year together. This year will be even more exciting than last year because we have a lovable labrador in our class three days a week! Between classes, Bear (the therapy dog) offers friendly hugs and kisses to nervous students learning to open their combination lockers and trying to get to class on time.
My Project
Bear is a 5 year old black Labrador Retriever. He is a certified therapy dog. He helps ease kids' (and adults') stress levels from the daily challenges of being middle school students. The kids' faces just light up when they see him in the hall. For a few fleeting seconds he brings them joy. For the students that are lucky enough to be in my math class, Bear is off-leash and walks to each student as if to welcome them to class. Bear also participates in the school's conflict resolution program. Our vision is that the student can sit in the Big Joe chair and their tension dramatically reduced by having Bear with them as they discuss the conflict.
