My classroom is one of the smaller classrooms in our building. Non moveable fixtures and having electricity on only one wall limits my ability to "create space". I have twenty 3rd grade students age 8-9 yrs. Many students suffer from housing and food insecurity. My students have ownership of the entire learning space, except for one small bookshelf I use to store teacher binders.
My classroom floor is tiled and is cold for sitting.
I have one small area rug students use for a reading spot, but only about 2 kids can sit on the rug for reading/working comfortably (This is my second year teaching 3rd grade.) My students have asked if we could get beanbag chairs or floor cushions to use for independent reading centers. Beanbag chairs/floor cushions are so versatile. They can easily be moved anywhere in the room. In addition to providing a comfy reading space, the chairs/cushions can be used as "seats" for students, providing additional/optional workspace.
My Project
These durable high quality beanbag chairs will add an ounce of softness and comfort to our classroom during centers. Currently students only have the option to sit on a small area rug I purchased at a local hardware store. The beanbags seats feature extra-high backs for full-body comfort and support! Each has a wipe-clean vinyl cover that includes a stitch-closed zipper to keep the polystyrene beads inside.
My students requested additional seating options for use during independent centers.
In addition to using the seating options in the reading center, beanbags/floor cushions can easily be moved throughout the classroom and/or hallway so students can have a comfortable option when completing small group work and independent work.
