My students are special because they LOVE to come to school to learn. My students attend a Title I school (based on over 75% free/reduced lunch). They are from a small town in the outskirts of Charlotte. It's a close-knit community where parents want the best for the children. Many parents work 2nd and 3rd shift jobs. Many are not available to help their child with homework in the afternoon/evenings because of work. Many come from single parent homes. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom you can see they are excited to be in the classroom.
Despite the many challenges they face, I try to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students like to move around. They love to read, and they love to talk about their successes in the classroom!
My Project
I returned to my classroom last week, only to remember that my bean bag chairs had lived their best life last year. I couldn't use them any longer. I got rid of them at the end of the year, but totally forgot until last week!
My classroom has several flexible seating options (high table w/ bar stools, coffee table with floor cushions, pillows, lap desks, clipboards, standing table, etc).
Students are able to work on their assignments where ever they feel most comfortable. I just need a few bean bag chairs because we don't have any for this year!
Students love sitting in a big comfortable bean bag chair with a lap desk in order to complete their work. Sometimes they will pull a bean bag chair over to the coffee table as well. These bean bag chairs will add the final touch to our flexible seating arrangement in our classroom.
