Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have just finished my first year teaching second grade at P.S. 138. It was truly a great year. I had the pleasure of teaching 29 wonderful children. However, throughout the year I was really disturbed to see that each time that my class went to art class, they would usually return to my class with a only a simple coloring sheet. I do not think that this kind of art project is challenging enough for my students.
My idea of arts and crafts projects are projects that use different, interesting materials that allow the children to express their creativity through exploring the process of making something. In addition to helping the students develop their creativity, arts and crafts is also important because it teaches children how to follow directions and work in steps. Learning to follow directions and work in steps is something that children need to focus on and develop in order to be successful in school.
I would love to incorporate arts and crafts with my students, and I am asking for funding to purchase some supplies such as beads, buttons, feathers, doilies, glass paint, foam collage pieces, felt pieces, large pipe cleaners, wind chime kits and door knob hanger kits.
It would be wonderful to be able to have my students do an art project as part of a culminating activity to a thematic unit or to celebrate a specific holiday. It is for this reason that I am requesting art supplies for my students. I want them to be able to have the opportunity to explore more deeply the connections betwen creativity, self-expression and school.
