I want to create a safe, engaging, and educational environment where the students in my classroom want to come and learn.
I teach children with special needs in grades K-5 on a Native American Indian Reservation.
One hundred percent of the student population receives free breakfast and lunch. They come to school eager to learn despite living in extreme poverty.
I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly provide positive experiences during the school day.
My Project
Our school district has decided to continue school as normal amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
Instead of going out of town on vacation, our class is having a beach ‘staycation’ while learning to budget a set amount of money.
I want to transform my classroom to resemble the beach. The tables and chairs will be pushed to the edges of the room and the tarps will be placed on the ground to resemble water.
Each student will be given a set amount of money when entering the class. They will be able to purchase items during their ‘stay’ such as pool float tubes, sunglasses, snow cones, and snacks.
Students will learn that “everything costs money and sometimes you need to decide what items you want the most because you don’t have enough money for everything.”
