My Students

I am the proud first grade teacher of 18 students from families of diverse backgrounds across the globe. One of our favorite activities is morning Affirmation Freeze Dance where we begin our day with positive self talk in our classroom mirror. They express themselves through movement and then each individually have the chance to look themselves in the mirror and proudly make an “I am” statement. For instance, I am unique, proud, worthy, brave, hardworking etc. These internal qualities are what give us our strength and our external qualities equally make us one-of-a-kind. They also love art and would be ecstatic to receive materials that allow them to visually present their unique external qualities.

My Project

Diversity, equity and inclusion: these are the pillars that should uphold a child’s right to the best education they can receive. I am committed to offering my students the creative tools they long for and deserve so that they can express how special they are and celebrate their uniqueness in the world. In first grade especially, students thrive in creating, making and artistic expression. The kinetic sand and ABC-bots will help my pre-emergent readers learn the letter names and sounds in an engaging and playful way. These materials may seem trivial, but to me they are essential in creating a classroom for everyone. These materials make the difference and will create moments for students to feel proud and seen for who they are!
