We have a 90% free and reduced meals rate at my school. However, when you walk into the building, the atmosphere is one of happiness, excitement, and caring. These students work hard every day to overcome the limitations they may face at home.
We believe that it is important to instill a strong sense of pride within our school.
With a fairly high percentage of students rotating through our doors, it is important to see what makes our community special.
We also want to instill in our students a growth mindset that they can accomplish whatever they set their minds to. Working together, we can all achieve more and reach our goals.
My Project
This project has been a year in the making. We have had a tough year with restroom usage in our school with the final result being that only class trips may be taken for bathroom breaks. The restrooms were being left a constant mess, in turn, causing loss of instructional time as learning had to be stopped to take the whole class to the restroom or phone calls had to be made to find an adult to escort a child.
Research shows that if you take pride in something, you are more apt to take care of it.
That being said, I believe that if students take pride and ownership in the school restrooms, they are more likely to keep them clean and presentable. With the addition of inspirational decals and some extra painted details, students are more likely to want to help to care of what they "own".
