Working remotely has come with many challenges. I am a special education teacher that works with students who need many hands-on focusing prompts and a teacher to sit besides them, encouraging them to complete a task. My students have been affected by Covid-19, some are living in crowded shelters, some are home alone for 12 hours because their guardians are essential workers, others have lost loved ones.
A few weeks ago, one of my students called me on a Friday night after 8pm just to tell me that he loved me and missed me.
This affected me so much that I decided that I needed to change my way of teaching. That Monday I started teaching live lesson using the Google Meet platform on a daily basis. Everyday, I go live at 10:00am and get to see my entire class who log on everyday! We are able to check-in, chat, go over the lesson and leave feeling a bit closer to each other . It is great to be able to give my students come consistency in this world of uncertainty.
My Project
This project is very different than any other project I have requested in the past. In this new world that we live in, we need to get creative in order help motivate our students to want to learn. We need new and innovated ways to teach. I teach a 5th grade 12:1:1 special education class where the students are use to having a teacher sit next to them and re-focus them onto their activities and work. In this new world, students are independently being asked to log onto a device, listening to a lesson without the physical touch of a focusing prompt and complete an assignment with little support.
I want to create motivational tee shirts to help focus my class and have them pay attention during live lessons.
While my students are dealing with loss, heartache, and feeling of loneliness, I want them to know that their teacher misses and loves them. Please help me get these supplies so I can create custom shirts for my live lessons.
