Ms. Khudan from Brooklyn NY is requesting professional development through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
I need funding to participate in Breathe For Change, a professional development opportunity that will certify me as a wellness and yoga teacher; which will help me improve my students and communities social-emotional wellness.

"Be The Change You Wish to See in the World" so stated by Gandhi, this is the way I wish to live my life. Our school is a Title I, neighborhood school located in Brooklyn, New York. I love being a school counselor working with children and families creating an open, safe space for them to grow. Through the years, I have had the pleasure of working with the most amazing kids who are funny, hard working, talented, and awesome. This past year has been a rollercoaster of emotional twist and turns, yet my students have persevered.
The best part of being a school counselor is working with my students who are faced with challenges outside of the school community.
In addition, our students may struggle academically, yet they come to school being resilient everyday with smiles on their faces. I love to see them thrive while counseling them, doing advisory classes, and conducting Social Emotional Learning (SEL) activities with them. My students and colleagues are constantly contributing to my growth as a school counselor and I am thankful and grateful everyday for that opportunity; while, I strive to encourage and provide them with growth mindfulness like goal setting.
Being a school counselor has been one of my most rewarding experiences. I have witnessed students develop and grow into mature and well educated future scholars. Seeing many of my students return to in person learning with a smile on their face and a resilient attitude after enduring the trauma of the pandemic has given me hope. However, not all students returned with the smile and resilience; some endured the trauma of being isolated from their peers, normal activities, and everyday lifestyle. Which means there is more work to be done. Education is not only academics but it is also developing students social-emotional learning and mindfulness which helps with long lasting life skills.
I am requesting the opportunity to attend a professional development yoga training that will help students learn mindfulness, wellness, yoga practices, and assist them in developing coping skills that will aid them in future development.
This project will help cover the cost of the Breathe For Change training program which will help me build on what I am teaching in my advisory program. This program will also enable me to share the positive changes I've experienced with my students, as well as with my colleagues.
The Breathe for Change wellness training program will help develop and improve students, families, and colleagues mindfulness. Upon graduation from Breathe for Change, I will become a certified yoga teacher that will earn a nationally recognized RYT-200 yoga teacher certification. In addition, through yoga techniques I will be able to improve students coping skills, aid in stress relief, assist in conflict resolution, encourage self love and self care within the school community. Once I have learned the vital yoga techniques it will assist me in helping my students cope with the trauma that is part of growing up in today's unpredictable times.
