Girls Book Club has anywhere from 10-30 girls in it weekly. This group of girls is very diverse in all aspects. They come from all different backgrounds and homes.
We decided to focus our project on girls who could use a boost of confidence and ones who frequented the library and also avoided the lunchroom.
These girls seemed quiet and didn't necessarily have a place to shine. All of the girls who have joined Book Club have amazing personalities and hearts.
This year, Mrs. P. and myself started an all girls, junior high book club (Be Squared). We started off as a small group of girls to get to know each other and discuss our love for books.
This upcoming year we hope to expand our club and offer more opportunities to get together and read.
Unfortunately, the socio-economic status of our group made it hard to get together, due to the pressure felt to purchase a book. We decided to help relieve that burden, by supplying the book. Our girls seem to thrive in the Be Squared environment, whereas normally they would shy away from social settings.
This club provides not only opportunities to read and explore different genres, but to express themselves and help define their true personalities. The girls tend to be shy, non-participatory, distant kids, who don't feel comfortable in large settings.
