The community in which our school is located is very close but suffers from high poverty and a high crime rate.
Students at our school are wonderful and have high goals, but they lack experiences and skills that many of their more affluent peers have.
Some of our classes have more than 50% of the students that are currently English language learners. We are always looking for ways to give our students a competitive edge to compete with the students not living in poverty.
For many of our students, we spend more time with them than their families because their family members work second and third shifts to provide for their needs. This leads to a lot of unsupervised time or a lot of siblings raising siblings. Our students lack many of the social-emotional skills that are expected in the real world. They face many challenges every day that are beyond the understanding of most people outside of an urban setting with high poverty.
My Project
Have you been homeschooling the past few months or working from home? Then you know the value of a personal tech device! I want my students to have the same access as students that do not live in poverty and that means I will build a personal Chromebook library for my students.
COVID-19 has changed the way we think about education and I would like to be prepared for a different type of learning when we return in the fall.
The way education will look in the fall is likely going to be different that what we are used to. Perhaps it will be traditional learning, but we are currently anticipating blended learning. No matter what, technology in the classroom and outside the classroom is vital to the future of education.
