This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Some believe we should leave a better country to our children, but it is more important to leave better children to our country" Calos Slim Helu. With this in mind I work to empower my kindergarten students with strong literacy and 21st century skills so they may make our world a better place.
There is one word for my students; Amazing!
They are culturally, linguistically and racially diverse and the majority come from homes living in poverty. 50% of my student are English language learners. Our school is a Title 1 school and over 50% of the students come from homes based in poverty. Most of my students do not arrive with life experiences to connect to in reading or to write about. As a reading specialist I work with those students who are having difficulty acquiring foundational literacy skills. When they come to me many students have never held a pencil, attended preschool where foundational skills are acquired, nor do they have crayons or books at home, let alone opportunities to develop technological skills needed for college and career. When given the opportunity, they show a love of learning using technology. When they are able to use technology to practice their literacy skills they quickly advance as they are eager to learn!
My Project
My students motivation and engagement soars when I use iPads as a vehicle to teach them to read and write effectively. You may think kindergarten is young for this type of learning, but I can assure you it is not in light of the expectations on these children in today's world. By being able to use iPads my students will have an edge as they advance their learning through the grades. They will be able to use their sensory abilities ( sight, hearing, touch) to help them learn and confirm letter names, sounds of letters, how to form letters, how make words by combining letters in the correct pattern, how to track print as they read books and how to write words and sentences all on the iPads. I can also hook up the iPads to our Apple TV to work with them as a group on the above mentioned activities. The iPads also allow me to take my students on virtual field trips to places like the zoo or the beach that they may never see so they can have an experiences to write about.
Your donation to my project will have an enormous impact on the lives and learning of my students.
You will be part of "amazing" by bringing the iPad into their hands. Not only will you be giving them a jump start on using technology, but you will be contributing to their motivation to engage in their literacy learning. Becoming literate will allow them to explore the arts and sciences, find their passions and be that better, amazing child who will change our world.
