I am working with my principal to fund materials for each 4th and 5th grader to create their own sketchbook/journal to enjoy as a year-round activity!
As a visual art teacher, I can tell you that it is natural for children to alternate between writing and picture making in the early years of education. If we encourage this process, writing will enrich academic performance and the art making will inspire creativity and authentic writing. A journal will focus on verbal and visual expression that children use to relate to their world. Young childen know that their experiences are the stuff that stories and poems are made of. Encouraging them to write down feelings and descriptions enhances literacy skills and provides a great outlet for creativity. As an art teacher it is important to me to teach reading skills along with visual art because creative writing helps build higher level thinking skills. Creative individuals make good problem solvers! And problem solvers are successful individuals!
I hope that this creative art/writing project will improve self expression and reading and writing skills! Imagine the fun of writing down experiences and facts, while being able to sketch them out beside the words. This would be a wonderful record of the school year that the student would keep forever! We need card stock paper approximately 9 X 12 that I could cut to size, and good adhesive. the number of students is 250-300.
