My students need (29) copies of (14) Anti-Bully books to learn ways to stop bullying and and (2) FLIP cameras to film each other play-acting "no bully" scenes in school.
My 1st Grade students are ages 5-7 and that may seem young to start learning about Bullying. However, we strongly believe that ALL school-age children need to be educated about bullying in an age appropriate way.
We want students to learn about this serious topic through FUN, hands-on lessons!
The behaviors our students learn in their early childhood years pave the way for the rest of their lives.
We want to encourage respect for all, understanding and appreciation of diversity.
Our commitment to differentiated instruction supports students of all ability levels in every classroom by integrating:
● English Language Learners (ELL students)
● English as a Second Language (ESL students)
● Students with Special Needs
● General Education students
Our diverse community is quite international with almost 70% of children coming from homes where English is spoken as a second language. One-fifth of our students receive extra support for learning English. We also provide communication materials to Parents in 4 home languages (English, Chinese, Spanish & Korean).
We are a Title I, New York City public school and nearly 60% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Our school's high poverty/high need classification has never stopped our students from doing their best.
My Project
We must start early to educate all students about bullying behavior.
1) BOOKS: (14) titles / (29) copies of books that focus on Anti-Bullying education from AKJ Books. These include stories for our younger readers ("Berenstain Bears & The Bully") to more complex stories ("My Secret Bully") and even a graphic novel ("Bus Ride Bully").
To extend this learning, we're requesting several copies of "Bullying in Schools" from The Townsend Press. We'll circulate these to Parents, who also need to be more aware and educated.
2) CAMERAS: To take their learning to the next level, we are requesting (2) FLIP Camcorders so that students can ACT OUT & FILM Bullying Scenes! They will work in groups to encourage cooperation & sharing. Each student will have a chance to act / experience common school situations from the view of a bully, a bystander, a follower, a teacher & a parent.
Each role plays a part in bullying & we want our students to know how to react / act when it happens in real life!
My students are dedicated and inspired learners who deserve the materials to help them succeed in all areas of their education.
This project would add to the terrific efforts of our School's Guidance Counselor that focus on character education each month.
Teaching every kid to be a buddy & not a bully is important for all school communities. We appreciate your support of our initiative to keep these First Grade lessons fun, but powerful by creating & sharing videos with the rest of the school!
