Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from all walks of life: some from down the street, across town, from Vietnam and the Philippines, and even from my own house. With ALL of our students receiving free and breakfast and lunch and a budget that operates at zero increase, opportunities are hard to come by. Despite these challenges, we are offering more and more of our students opportunities and incentives by enrolling in AP and early credit programs, many new course offerings as well as alternate ways to gain credit. I can't begin to tell you how impressed, motivated and inspired I am by the students at my high school.
My Project
These class sets of books will inspire kids to read. Many of the students in my class have had great difficulty being successful in regular English classes. By enrolling in Sports Literature, students have made the choice to find a pathway to reading and writing that previously didn't exist. Despite having a place to enroll, we have limited resources and supplies. Students should be limitless in their pursuit of knowledge. It will be quite a moment when they get to be the first ones to open the books and put their names on the inside cover. Knowing that these books were selected specifically for them will give them a sense of empowerment and importance. The content in these books will engage students as well as inspire them not only in their academic lives, but personal lives as well. Student engagement is at the core of student success. This course and these books will let my students know how much we care.
