Imagine a world without books. That is a reality for many of my students at home. The only literature that they may be exposed to is what they read in school.
My students attend second grade at a Title 1 school in Florida.
These eight year old minds come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are English language learners, several are in special education, and others are academically gifted. Just as varied, are their reading abilities from above to below grade level.
Now imagine that your teacher asks you to analyze a textbook, but the only person in the classroom with access to the book is the teacher. Not fair!
Yet, every year, second graders are asked to do a close reading unit of the book, Bats At The Beach, by Brian Lies, with the goal of deciphering all the figurative language used by the author.
Unfortunately, students can't get close to a book that they can't thumb through! Please help me put a copy of this delightful book into the hands of each of my second grade students, so they can learn firsthand how to enjoy literature.
