My students are amazingly bright individuals. They come from diverse backgrounds and economic statuses. They are kind and accepting. They are honest and compassionate. For their small frames, they sure have big minds.
I am blessed to wake up and go to my job every day.
My students give me joy beyond words. They show me that my job is important. I am lucky to be their teacher and be able to share their dreams and silliness and to witness the educational milestones that they reach.
My Project
Sometimes math can be a very challenging subject area for students to grasp. Battleship is a game that teaches students to learn graphing, simple computations, and strategy skills.
In order to succeed in this game, one must be able to call out graphing coordinates and plot them.
Students like to play games and try to win. As a game, students won't be hesitant to play or learn the skill. It makes learning the skill engaging on fun.
There are simple computations that students are constantly encountering. How many ships have I sunk? How many have they sunk? How many total hits do I have? How many total misses? Ar any given moment, how many turns have I taken? They are constantly thinking about math with this game and learning to participate in a face to face game.
The strategy and problem solving skill in Battleship is far superior to any word problem I can hand them. This is 30 minutes of problem solving and strategy. It encourages higher level thinking skills and they learn to engage with others.
